Mazda is known for good-looking, affordable, fun-to-drive cars but this has also lead them to having lower fuel ratings than their competitors simply due to the fact the more power you give a car the more fuel it will consume. Mazda determined it needed better fuel economy and has since introduced the Skyactiv technology. Skyactiv includes high engine compression, an innovative piston cavity design, and direct fuel injection, resulting in an improved EPA estimated miles-per-gallon rating of 28 city and 40 highway.

Mazda recently introduced the 2012 Mazda 3 that will have a normal 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 154-horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque, but now features the Skyactiv technology. This results in a 26 percent improvement in fuel economy, or 36 mpg. The 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv is both fuel efficient and sporty and Phoenix Mazda drivers will enjoy knowing there was also an announced price cut.

The entire range has been given a small facelift, only changing the headlights and grille slightly. The headlights allow for increased road visibility while the grille remains distinct and aerodynamic. Overall the updates produce improved aerodynamics and better handling, while the new body frame allows for better soundproofing and a quiet cabin. However the best aspect of the updated Mazda 3 is its handling, whether it is remote country roads or paved highways the Mazda 3 is easily able to handle whatever the road throws its way.

The interior was given a slight update with the intentions of creating a more inviting cabin and higher quality feel. The center stack, shift gate, and instrument panel are now all black for a bolder statement. Silver sating-polished accents were added to common controls for a refined look and to accentuate their location for ease of operation. The multi-information display and liquid crystal display texts and graphics were changed to be easier to read, which both Mazda 3 Phoenix drivers and passengers will benefit from. The sporty twin-meter design of the instrument cluster is highlighted by continous-lit white graphic meters. The seats were upgraded to a three-dimensional fabric pattern with gray cross-threads to add contrast. Higher trim levels receive a different three-dimensional seat fabric pattern or choice of leather.  There is also an optional feature available called the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system. When a vehicle is detected entering the blind spot area, indicator lamps housed within the door mirrors will light. If a turn signal is activated while the indicators are lit, the indicators flash and a buzzer provide an additional warning.

What is Skyactiv? It simply is a set of new technology Mazda has introduced to improve efficiency. Therefore Skyactiv can take on a different specific meaning depending on which part of the car you are talking about.

For instance in regards to the engine, Skyactiv technology allows a 15 percent improvement in both torque and fuel economy. Unlike traditional engines that rely on external support to gain fuel efficiency, Skyactiv optimizes the internal-combustion process. The compression ratio actually is 13:1, which is higher than that of Ferrari. The higher compression ratio results in higher cylinder temperatures that increase chances of preignition. Mazda was able to contain this heat produced and essentially use it. The Skyactiv engines can be found in the Mazda 3, 6, and CX-5.

As fuel evaporates upon entering the cylinder, Skyactiv direct injection provides a cooling effect. Mazda was able to diminish the time for the air/fuel mixture to denote before it’s ignited by changing the shape of the piston and six-hole injectors. The 4-2-1 exhaust manifold also capitalizes on the quantity of hot gas removed during exhaust stroke and prevents it from going into adjacent cylinders. At lower loads, Skyactiv technology actively lowers the compression ratio while putting energy into preserving long, power-producing expansion strokes. Compared to a typical engine the intake valves close later and any excess air is forced into the intake manifold before combustion. The throttle is also designed to reduce pumping losses that affect all throttled engines. Mazda engineers reworked the dimensions of the engine and enlarged the piston stoke by 8.1 millimeters, which compensates for the low-end torque found in normal engines. A combination of Shorter piston skirts, an updated water pump, and roller finger followers on the valvetrain rocker arms result in Skyactiv technology reducing internal friction by 30 percent for Mazda Arizona drivers.

All aspects of Skyactiv are still not as easily understood as hybridization but it provides measurable results. For example the Mazda 3 with Skyactiv technology gets 28/40 mpg, which when compared to older models, is significantly better. For additional power and efficiency Mazda also uses technology that can be found in other cars such as turbochargers and electric motors. The combination of this technology and Skyactiv allows optimal combustion which in turn results in an efficient performance.

The CX-5 features an all-new SKYACTIV Technology which brings fuel economy and performance together. The 2.0-liter direct-inject SKYACTIV-G engine produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque, all while using 15% less fuel and creating 15% less emissions than previous Mazda models. There are two transmissions available that have increased responsiveness and fuel efficiency. The SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed Sport automatic transmission has an advanced control module that gives it the feel of a manual transmission. The manual SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed features the shortest shift stroke in its class. The SKYACTIV-G 2.0L FWD manual offers an extremely impressive highway fuel efficiency of 35 mpg and a city of 26 and the automatic comes in at 32 highway mpg and 26 city mpg.

On the outside the new Mazda CX-5 has the bold KODO, or “soul of motion”, design that is intended to mimic constant motion. The rear spoiler gives the car a sporty look but also helps manage air flow over the vehicle and reduce turbulence. The CX-5 also has advanced illumination technology with Bi-Xenon High-Intensity- Discharge (HID) headlights. They provide a brighter, whiter, and broader light in all conditions. Mazda also added Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), which syncs the headlights to pivot in connection with the CX-5, improving visibility. Halogen fog lights are also standard on the Touring and Grand Touring models. Other features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, available Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) System, heated side mirrors, and tinted privacy window make the exterior of the car stylish and add functionality, for Mazda CX-5 Phoenix drivers.

Inside the cabin is refined with stylish components that yet again add functionality and comfort. There are premium leather-trimmed seats on the Grand Touring models that feature an eight way power driver’s seat with lumbar support. There is also the Push Button Start system standard on all trims. An available dual-zone automatic climate control system with three-level heated front seats over custom comfort that can be automatically adjusted. There is 64.8 cubic feet of available cargo space that has a convenient light system that can be turned on or off.  The navigation features TomTom state-of-the-art system that includes more than 6 million points of interests like gas stations, restaurants, and more.  In addition to the navigation system the CX-5 also has an advanced audio system. MP3 audio capability and mobile MP3 player ports come standard. There is also available Bluetooth audio streaming and Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System.  Bose also provides an AudioPilot noise compensation system that sense noise and automatically adjusts the music for the most clear and rich sound. The optional SiriusXM satellite radio also delivers more than 120 stations.
